Lo que más me interesa es detectar trucos útiles en autores admirables y tratar de utilizarlos en el contexto de nuestros manuscritos. En esos cursos la lectura es como un botiquín de primeros auxilios. Nadie te da mejores consejos sobre un remedio que quien tuvo que usarlo. Lo que menos funciona suele ser la reticencia de ciertos jóvenes autores ante la crítica. De pronto uno de ellos dice: “Esto no se entiende porque no quiero que se entienda”. Se trata de alguien que no tiene interés en el juicio externo y eso dificulta el trabajo. A mi modo de ver, escribir implica someterse al juicio ajeno: tu texto sólo existe en forma cabal cuando alguien lo lee.
En un taller logrado, la literatura vale más al final del curso que al inicio. El entusiasmo y la motivación deben surgir de atestiguar una forma de la experiencia progresivamente fascinante. Vale la pena alentar al alumno en sus logros concretos, pero no estamos ante un tipo de motivación de entrenador deportivo, que dice “tú puedes”, “tienes que dar un salto”. Por otra parte, no hay nada más apasionante y divertido que corregir. El escritor que no lo entienda debe dedicarse a otra cosa. La única manera de probar la crítica que se hace en un taller consiste en leer una segunda o una tercera versión de un texto para comprobar si hay mejorías o no. Corregir no debe verse como un castigo, una condena al pasillo de la muerte de los escritores, sino como un estímulo para mejorar el texto.
Uno de los misterios de la escritura es que se puede aprender pero no hay un método preciso para enseñarla. Es obvio que Borges y Cervantes aprendieron su oficio, pero no hay una pedagogía para ser Borges o Cervantes. En una ocasión, César Aira impartió un seminario con un título provocador: “Cómo ser Rimbaud”. “¡Los alumnos salieron tan decepcionados!”, comentaba con ironía. No hay reglas para ser otro por escrito porque la voz literaria es la forma más personal del artificio. Dicho todo esto, un buen taller puede dar las bases para que ese salto hacia la voz literaria se facilite más.
La enseñanza no es una ciencia exacta; depende mucho de la forma en que la aplica cada quien. A mi modo de ver, hay tres factores que definen a un maestro. El primero es un poco teatral. Tiene que ver con la manera en que expone las cosas, la claridad con que traslada sus ideas, la empatía que siente por los alumnos, la curiosidad y la pasión que puede despertarles, y la capacidad de detectar sus necesidades e intereses para vincularlos con el curso. Todo esto habla del temperamento expositivo del maestro. Luego viene algo que se suele dar por sentado pero que no siempre ocurre: los conocimientos fácticos. El maestro debe aportar cosas concretas que el alumno no sabe: datos, referencias, asociaciones, citas, fechas, correspondencias, contextos. En un curso de literatura creativa debe relacionar las tentativas de sus alumnos con procesos semejantes recorridos por otros autores. La capacidad discursiva y la aportación de conocimientos positivos conforman al buen maestro. Para que sea en verdad grande necesita un tercer elemento: la originalidad de juicio. Esto es lo más difícil de lograr. No es lo mismo estudiar a Shakespeare con alguien que expone el canon con rigor y solvencia que estudiarlo con alguien que además tiene una idea única de Shakespeare. En el caso de la literatura creativa, el maestro se juega sus cartas más complejas en la concepción que tiene de la literatura. No es lo mismo estudiar con un epígono de la tradición que con un renovador de las formas.
“Fui aceptado en el taller de Monterroso. Sería una vanidosa temeridad decir que aprendí a escribir en un año de conversaciones dominadas por la ironía de Monterroso. Estas tertulias clásicas estaban destinadas, más que a remediar los despropósitos de los alumnos, a revelar en qué consiste un cuento perfecto.
Monterroso no perdió el tiempo tratando de rescatarnos de nosotros mismos, nos demostró que la vida existe para volverse cuento, un valor imprescindible en esos años sin rumbo en que había depositado mis ilusiones en un equipo que nunca ganaba campeonatos y muchachas que no acusaban recibo de mis taquicardias.
Jorge Valdano dice que César Luis Menotti lo autorizó a soñar. La frase tiene la exagerada contundencia de quienes deben medir su destino en noventa minutos, pero describe con certeza los alcances de todo magisterio.
Monterroso me entregó un sistema de creencias. El olor del sándalo, la delicada osatura de una mano, la lluvia como una expansión pánica de los amantes, la luz de la Luna reflejada en un charco de agua, el ladrido nocturno de los perros, las sábanas recién cambiadas y el rumor del mar son pretextos para escribir cuentos. De cualquier forma, la pasión suele fijar sus prioridades, incluso entre quienes practican varios géneros. Cada vez que un animoso centauro visitaba el taller y presumía de estar escribiendo una novela (algo que en aquella época expansiva siempre constaba de cuatrocientas páginas), Monterroso comentaba: “¡Ah, te estás entrenando para escribir cuentos!”.
Ninguna variante de la prosa ofrece mayores desafíos para los buscadores de destellos rápidos. ¿Es posible superar el asombro de un final insólito que resulta repentinamente congruente con las diez cuartillas anteriores? En este tenso campo de significados, una palabra de más equivale a una detonación y el lector avanza con el estremecimiento de quien desactiva una carga de dinamita. Además, escribir cuentos les sienta bien a los irregulares incapaces de acatar horarios. Según Raymond Carver, es la ocupación perfecta para el borracho que solo tiene unos ratos de lucidez, detesta a su familia y toma el coche para ir a escribir a un estacionamiento. Por su parte, Graham Greene optó por el relato breve en sus últimos años para estar seguro de concluir el texto antes de morir. Espacio de los enfermos de tiempo, el relato se estimula con el inclemente parquímetro que mide “hora y fracción” e incluso con la agonía de sus ejecutores”.
